Households with 1+ Vehicle

Measurement Period: 2023
This indicator shows the percentage of households owning one or more vehicles.

Why is this important?

Vehicle ownership is directly related to individual ability to travel. Vehicles allow households to better access jobs and essential local services such as supermarkets, doctors' offices, and hospitals. However, overdependence on vehicles contributes to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Air pollutants are known factors in respiratory disease and chronic illnesses such as asthma, as well as cardiovascular disease and mortality. In addition, a higher level of personal vehicle driving is associated with increased traffic accidents and fatalities.

Technical note: The U.S. Census Bureau calculates 90% confidence intervals for American Community Survey estimates. Use caution when interpreting values with wide confidence intervals. Confidence intervals that are farther away from estimates in either direction indicate uncertainty due to small survey sample sizes. There were data collection issues in 2020 that severely affected the ACS data quality of that year. Therefore, data are not available for the 2020 period.
